*What you can put in a skip

For most domestic and commercial clearances, skips are suitable for general mixed waste such as:

• Household waste
• Garden waste
• Wood
• Cardboard and packaging
• Plastics
• Metal
• Soil
• Bricks
• Rubble
• Concrete
• Tiles
• Old kitchen units
• Bathroom fittings
• Non-electrical fixtures and fittings
• General building waste

*Some materials may need to be kept separate or declared when booking, especially if you have large quantities of one type of waste.
If you are unsure, it is always best to ask before placing the item in your skip.

Why are some items not allowed in a skip?

Some waste needs specialist handling.

This may be because the item is hazardous, contains chemicals, needs to be recycled separately, or cannot be processed safely with general mixed waste.

Putting restricted items into a skip can cause problems at collection or disposal.

In some cases, the item may need to be removed before the skip can be collected, or additional charges may apply.

Our advice is simple: if in doubt, ask first.

Sofas, armchairs and upholstered furniture

Upholstered seating, such as sofas, armchairs, cushions and some padded furniture, may need to be handled separately.

This is because some upholstered domestic seating can contain substances known as POPs, or Persistent Organic Pollutants. These items may need a specific disposal route and should not be placed in a general skip unless this has been agreed beforehand.

Examples may include: Sofas, Armchairs, Sofa beds, Cushions, Upholstered dining chairs, Padded stools, Bean bags & Futons.

Please contact us before placing any upholstered seating in your skip so we can advise you properly.

Plasterboard and gypsum-based waste

Plasterboard should not be mixed with general waste.

If you have plasterboard, please let us know before booking your skip.

Depending on the amount and type of waste, it may need to be kept separate or handled in a specific way.

This is common on building, renovation and strip-out projects, so it is always worth mentioning plasterboard when you book.

Paint, oils and liquids

Liquids should not be placed in a skip.

This includes: Paint, Engine oil, Cooking oil, Fuel, Solvents, Cleaning chemicals, Other liquid waste.

Even sealed containers can leak during transport or processing. If you have paint tins, oils or chemicals to dispose of, please ask us for advice before placing them in the skip.

Electrical items, fridges and freezers

Electrical items should not be placed in a general skip unless this has been agreed in advance.

This includes items such as: TVs, Computer monitors, Microwaves, Kettles, Toasters, Washing machines, Fridges, Freezers, Other appliances

Fridges and freezers in particular need specialist handling, so please contact us before loading them.
